the Mercury Plastics Scholarship

The Mercury Plastics Scholarship was established in August 2019 by Mercury Plastics, Inc. The scholarship offers financial support to exceptional students in the Women in Engineering and Increasing Diversity in Engineering Academics programs at The University of Akron. Students in these programs are pursuing undergraduate degrees in electrical or mechanical engineering.

Mercury Plastics, located in Middlefield, Ohio, provides innovative thermoplastic solutions to a variety of markets including appliance, automotive, construction, electrical, faucet, liquid dispensing, marine, medical, off-shore oil and plumbing. The company is recognized as an industry leader, providing unique approaches to profile extrusion, injection overmolding and fabrication of thermoplastic parts. Their capabilities set them apart from the competition, and they are further distinguished as one of only a few North American companies with a captive electron beam processing facility. Built in 1999, this facility houses a five mega-volt electron beam allowing them to cross-link a variety of polymers.

The Mercury Plastics Scholarship is to be awarded to undergraduate freshmen through senior level students pursuing electrical or mechanical engineering degrees. Students must have a minimum 3.0 GPA and maintain it to be considered for scholarship renewal. They must also be a member of the Women in Engineering program and/or the Increasing Diversity in Engineering Academics program, and demonstrate financial need. Mercury Plastics will review scholarship applications provided by the College of Engineering and provide recommendations to the College for final selection.
