Dr. Stephen F. Hallam Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was initially known as The Management Faculty Scholarship when it was established by The University of Akron Department of Management faculty in July 1996. The faculty renamed the scholarship as The Dr. Stephen F. Hallam Memorial Scholarship in November 2018 to honor Department colleague, Dr. Stephen F. Hallam.
Dr. Hallam grew up on a small farm in Forrest, Illinois, and received his Ph.D. in Business Administration from the University of Iowa in 1973. He went on to be a prolific writer, contributing to the management discipline with numerous articles and books about strategic management, leadership, computing systems, ethics and principles of management. He was passionate about his work and was committed to providing quality education to students.
Dr. Hallam was dean of The University of Akron College of Business Administration from 1995- 2003, and a beloved professor in the Department of Management until his passing. Before joining The University of Akron, he was dean of the School of Management at the University of Michigan-Flint and an associate dean and director of Graduate Studies in Business at Northern Illinois University.
Dr. Hallam passed away on March 13, 2017 after a valiant and hard-fought battle with lung cancer. He was a loving and devoted husband to his wife, Teresa, and father to his four children – Patricia, Margaret, Rodney, and Kenneth. He also loved being a grandparent. To countless students he was a bright, inspiring educator, and he was a cherished and good-humored friend to many. The Dr. Stephen F. Hallam Memorial Scholarship is to be awarded annually, as funds are available, to full-time students that have declared management (human resources, supply chain, or information systems) as their major with a minimum GPA of 3.0. Students must also have successfully completed all general education requirements and completed at least one course in management at The University of Akron. Selection will be made by the Department of Management.
