The Robert E. Mercer Goodyear North American Region Scholarship

The Robert E. Mercer Goodyear North American Region Scholarship pays tribute to the fundamental tie between community involvement and American enterprise. Much of Mr. Mercer’s 42 years with Goodyear was devoted to the growth and expansion of Goodyear’s North American operations, including its Kelly-Springfield subsidiary and its engineering products division. In 1978, Mr. Mercer became Goodyear’s president; by 1980, its chief operating officer; and by 1983, chairman.

The Goodyear Global Scholarship Program, established in 1998, enhances the continuing spirit of partnership between The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and The University of Akron. Numerous University graduates have gone on to hold key positions at Goodyear, while Goodyear executives share their expertise in University classes and advisory groups. Preparing competent and responsible future leaders in the field of international business is the central mission of The Goodyear Global Scholarship Program.

The Goodyear Global Scholarship Program makes available four full-academic undergraduate scholarships to the sons and daughters of full-time Goodyear associates, subsidiaries, and retirees worldwide. The annual competition for these awards, administered by Goodyear’s four business units, identifies and honors four academically talented students seeking degrees in international business. Four scholarships are awarded annually.
