Janet B. Purnell Self-Sufficiency Scholarship

The Janet B. Purnell Self-Sufficiency Scholarship was established in 1988 by Zeta Theta Omega Alumnae Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., in honor of its distinguished member. Janet B. Purnell served as president of the University Board of Trustees in 1986-87, which concluded a nine-year term on the Board. The earnings of this endowed fund are utilized to provide scholarship assistance to a minority female, single parent, head of household, receiving public assistance, and residing in Summit County for one year. This assistance may include tuition, fees, books, and/or child care expenses at The University of Akron Nursery Center. The selection will be based upon the completion of at least 12 credits in a degree-granting program, a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or higher, and enrollment with a minimum of six credits. The chapter’s Scholarship Committee interviews candidates recommended by The University of Akron and determines the recipient.
