the Alena and Dr. David M. Schwaber Endowed Scholarship
The Alena and Dr. David M. Schwaber Endowed Scholarship, established in 2018, recognizes well-deserving University of Akron students majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry.
Dr. Schwaber received his undergraduate degree from Worcester Polytechnic Institute and his master’s degree in chemical engineering from Cornell University. He earned a Ph.D. degree in polymer science in 1971 from The University of Akron.
Dr. Schwaber is the retired president of Monarch Rubber in Baltimore, MD. Founded in 1928 by Dr. Schwaber’s uncle, Sol Schwaber, Monarch Rubber manufactured rubber products for the transportation, footwear, marine, sporting goods and orthopedic industries, among others. In 2005, Monarch Rubber was sold to Armacell, LLC.
Each year, The Alena and Dr. David M. Schwaber Endowed Scholarship shall provide a total of $18,000 in scholarships, with no single scholarship exceeding $9,000, to University of Akron students majoring in chemistry, chemical engineering or biochemistry. Selection shall be made by the University Scholarship Committee and may be renewed as long as recipients remain in good standing and funds are available.
