Mallo Family Scholarship Fund
The Mallo Family Scholarship Fund (“Fund”) was established in December, 2001 by Ted A. Mallo and JoAnn E. Mallo and last revised in May 2018. Ted Mallo served for twelve years as a member of the Green Local Schools Board of Education, including two terms as President. JoAnn Mallo served as an elementary school teacher in Green Local Schools for twenty years.
It is intended that The Mallo Family Scholarship Fund provide one annual scholarship of up to
$1,000.00 to a graduate of the Green Local School District in the City of Green, Summit County, Ohio who, upon graduation from high school, matriculates at and attends The University of Akron as a full-time student. The scholarship shall be applied directly to the recipient’s UA student account for payment of tuition, fees, and room and board.
The Mallo Family Scholarship Fund is an endowed account to be held and administered by The University of Akron Foundation. Currently, the fair market value of the endowed account is in excess of $87,000.
There shall be five categories of criteria that shall guide the selection process, which shall be conducted by the Green Local Schools through an application and review process determined by the Green Local Schools, and in coordination with University of Akron scholarship award policies and procedures.
The first three criteria — scholarship, leadership and athletics, — have minimum requirements. The remaining two criteria shall be determined within the reasonable discretion of the Green Local School District:
Scholarship: Only students who have a minimum 3.25 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and meet the Leadership and Athletic criteria, shall be considered eligible for consideration for the award;
Leadership: Student leaders are those who are participants in and promoters of school activities, dependable, resourceful, willing to assume leadership positions as evidenced by holding at least one significant leadership position during their enrollment in high school, trustworthy, and who exemplify positive attitudes about life;
Athletics: Only students who are also student athletes (as evidenced by having participated on and “lettered” in at least one interscholastic athletic team while in high school)shall be considered eligible for consideration on the basis of other criteria;
Character: Students of good character uphold and demonstrate principles of morality, ethics, honesty and reliability, and show common courtesy, concern, and respect for others and generally maintain a healthy lifestyle;
Service: This quality is defined through the voluntary participation in school or community activities or by voluntary contributions made by a student to the school or community, done without compensation and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit.
The scholarship shall be identified by the Green Local Schools as the “Mallo Student Achievement Award.” The criteria upon which it is to be awarded has been established in recognition of the student achievement of Ted and JoAnn Mallo’s three children, each of whom attended and graduated from Green Local Schools. Ted (Class of ’86) and Tim (Class of ’87) each of whom received the Senior Class Manhood Award. Robin, (Class of ’90), who received the Senior Class Womanhood Award. All three children were high academic achievers, including valedictorian honors for both Ted and Tim, and all three children “lettered” in multiple sports for multiple years while in high school.
The Mallo Student Achievement Award is intended to recognize academic achievers who also excel outside the classroom as evidenced by their demonstrated performance and conduct similar to that of recipients of manhood and womanhood designations, as well as by their participation as a senior student-athlete and lettering in at least one interscholastic sport.
