Men In Nursing Scholarship

The Men in Nursing Scholarship was established in 2009 by the Men in Nursing student organization at The University of Akron’s College of Nursing. The purpose of the scholarship is to offer support and encouragement to nursing students who are members of the Men in Nursing organization.
Men In Nursing formed in 2007, provides a framework for nurses and student nurses to meet, discuss and influence factors which affect male nursing students and nurses, The goals and objectives of the organization are to:
• Encourage men of all ages to become nurses and join together with all nurses in strengthening and humanizing health care.
• Support men who are nurses or student nurses to grow professionally and demonstrate to each other and to society the increasing contributions being made by men within the nursing profession.
• Advocate for continued research, education and dissemination of information about men’s health issues, men in nursing, and nursing knowledge at the local and national levels.
• Support members’ full participation in the nursing profession and Its organizations and use this organization for the limited objectives stated above.

The Men in Nursing Scholarship is used to support a student attending The University of Akron’s College of Nursing and holding membership in the Men in Nursing student organization. The recipient will be selected by a committee comprised of Charles Kelades, Director of Nursing Outreach and Workforce Development, and the president and vice president of Men in Nursing, and in collaboration with the College of Nursing’s Office of Student Affairs. As funds are available, one award of $250 will be made each year from The Men in Nursing Scholarship fund.

In 2009, the Men in Nursing student organization held a fundraiser by conducting a push-up challenge and raised more than $800 to initiate the scholarship. Additional contributions to the fund are always welcome. The Men in Nursing Scholarship will be funded by the organization and awarded on an annual basis until funding is discontinued or the account is depleted.
