Benjamin G. Ammons Sesquicentennial Dean's Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering

In recognition of The University of Akron’s 150th anniversary, The Benjamin G. Ammons Sesquicentennial Dean’s Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering was established by Benjamin “Ben” Ammons in 2021. A first-generation college student, Ben earned a B.S. in mechanical engineering from The University of Akron in 1958. While a student, Ben was President of the 1958 Graduating Class and active in the Air Force ROTC serving as Commanding Officer his senior year. Additionally, Ben was member of the A-Key and Omicron Delta Kappa (ODK) honorary societies, as well as Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity, holding several offices including Vice President of Inter-fraternity Council, and he participated in University Theater.

Ben’s career led him to the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company (now Bridgestone Corporation), joining the company in 1982. Over the course of his tenure, Ben was a Corporate Officer and held several executive positions including President of the Diversified Products Companies and Executive Vice President of The Firestone Tire Company. He retired as Corporate Senior Vice President of Total Quality Management.

The University has benefitted by Ben’s servant leadership for more than four decades. He has held leadership posts as a member of The University of Akron Board of Trustees, The University of Akron Foundation Board, and College of Engineering Dean’s Advancement Council.

The Benjamin G. Ammons Sesquicentennial Dean’s Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering has been established to honor Ben’s legacy and support future students in their pursuit of mechanical engineering studies at The University of Akron.

The Benjamin G. Ammons Sesquicentennial Dean’s Scholarship in Mechanical Engineering was established to provide financial support to students studying mechanical engineering.
