Lloyd 0. Lohaus Endowment Fund
Lloyd 0. Lohaus came to Akron, Ohio from St. Louis to work for The Firestone Tire and Rubber Company. Inspired as a boy by Dr. Elias Huer, the scientist in the Buck Rogers science fiction series, Lloyd decided early in life he wanted to be a scientist. Born into a working family in St. Louis, Missouri, Lloyd’s prospects to attend college were slight. But as a good student, Lloyd was recruited for the Navy’s “V-12” program and became a navy pilot He not only “got his wings” but equally important, was able to start college at Southwest Missouri State Teacher’s College while in the military, and thanks to the “GI Bill,” completed a degree in mechanical engineering at Washington University in his hometown of St. Louis Lloyd worked for 30 years in tire development for passenger and truck tires at Firestone at the time radial tires were first developed. Lloyd called Akron home for his entire professional career and for this reason Lloyd established his endowment to provide scholarship assistance for students to attend The University of Akron.
In retirement Lloyd moved to Florida, and for more than 17 years he has been one of the most energetic and involved members of his retirement community, Cypress Village. Lloyd has taught ballroom and line dancing at Cypress Village, and he takes advantage of his proximity to the ocean by flying kites on the beach. Lloyd has traveled extensively and as a result, was inducted into the Circumnavigators Club, which recognizes those whose travels have taken them around the world. The Club’s mission is to use friendship to leave the world a better place. Lloyd has truly taken that mission to heart. The purpose of this scholarship is to provide scholarship support for students in the College of Engineering, with preference given to students pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering. Selection is to be made by the College’s Scholarship Committee in collaboration with the Office of Financial Aid.
