Clyde Howard Bolinger & Jean Ann Gravesmill Bolinger Undergraduate Scholarship

The Clyde Howard Bolinger & Jean Ann Gravesmill Bolinger Undergraduate Scholarship was established at The University of Akron in December 2022 to honor the memory of the Bolingers, who were passionate advocates for literacy, social justice, and peace. The scholarship will provide financial support to an undergraduate student who qualifies for a Pell Grant. Clyde and Jean’s family established the award in the hope that it produces a more economically diverse student body.

Clyde Bolinger, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1954, and Jean Ann Gravesmill Bolinger, who earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1958, attended UA when it was largely populated by commuters and considered a municipal university. Each excelled academically and also found time for extracurricular activities; Clyde as a member of the baseball team and Jean as a majorette and member of the Alpha Gamma Delta sorority. All four of their children are UA alumni along with four of their eight grandchildren. The scholarship has been established as part of UA’s We Rise Together, the Campaign for The University of Akron.

The Clyde Howard Bolinger & Jean Ann Gravesmill Bolinger Undergraduate Scholarship is available to full- or part-time students demonstrating financial need by being eligible for a Pell Grant and will be awarded as funds are available. Students may receive the scholarship for a total of four years provided they remain in good academic standing at the University. Recipient selection will be made by the University Scholarship Committee.
