Annie E. Paul and Betty H. Paul Nursing Scholarship
The Annie E. Paul and Betty H. Paul Nursing Scholarship was established by Mr. Samuel J. Paul to honor his mother, Annie and his wife, Betty. A native of Ireland, Annie Paul volunteered for a group similar to the American Red Cross during World War I. This experience inspired in her a heart for nursing, however, she was never able to attend college. After moving to the United States in 1919, Mrs. Paul met and married Samuel Paul’s father. When Sam was four years old, his father died, and his mother dedicated her life to raising him.
Sam Paul and Betty Hibbs met at Goodyear Bank where they both worked. The couple married in 1953. Sam Paul eventually retired from the bank, and Betty, from the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company.
Through this scholarship, Samuel Paul, a 1950 alumnus of The University of Akron, wishes to help others attain their bachelor’s degree in nursing as an opportunity that eluded his mother.
The scholarship provides support for a student enrolled in The University of Akron College of Nursing’s baccalaureate program. Recipients will be selected based on financial need and demonstration of the ideals of the nursing profession. Selection of the recipient will be made by the Office of Student Affairs in the College of Nursing.
